At Impact Hub Zürich, a coworking space, I met Karime Abib (Adventika agency) and we came up with the idea of organising a Climate Fresk workshop open to the communities of visual practitioners in Switzerland and Impact Hub. Climate Fresk is an association set up in 2018 to raise awareness of climate issues through an educational workshop open to all. There were half a dozen of us taking part, including 3 visual practitioners.
I was curious to see how the techniques would mix together, as Climate Fresk is based on visuals, with these sets of cards to arrange. What's more, it's difficult to take part and capture the content at the same time - it's a question of time, but also of perspective, as I was involved in the process rather than an observer. So all I did at the time was make a few rough notes and then create the visuals using photos from my colleague Felix Sandhofer.
The results were very rich and I think that the different types of visuals came together very well: the rectangular Climate Fresk cards, our annotations, arrows and sketches drawn directly on the background paper, and then the mix of photos and digital sketchnotes which captured the process more than the result. So it was a very stimulating experience, in terms of intellectual reflection, creativity and group energy, and I'm leaving with a visualisation project to reduce food waste... to be continued!
