I met Karime Abib (Adventika agency)at Impact Hub Zürich, a coworking space, and we came up with the idea of organising a Climate Fresk workshop for the of visual practitioner in Switzerland and Impact Hub communities. Climate Fresk is an association set up in 2018 to raise awareness of climate issues through an educational workshop open to all. Half a dozen of us took part, including three visual practitioners.
I was curious to see how the techniques would merge, as Climate Fresk is based on visuals with sets of cards to arrange. It’s challenging to participate and capture the content simultaneously. It's a question of time and perspective, as I was involved in the process rather than being an observer. So, all I did at the time was make a few rough notes and then create the visuals using photos taken by my colleague, Felix Sandhofer.
The results were rich and productive, and I think the different types of visuals came together very well. These comprised the rectangular Climate Fresk cards, our annotations, arrows, and sketches drawn directly on the background paper, and a mix of photos and digital sketchnotes, which captured the process more than the result. It was a very stimulating experience encompassing intellectual reflection, creativity, and group energy, and I left with a visualisation project to reduce food waste … to be continued!
